Eye Disease Management

Eye disease management involves evaluating an existing or suspected condition and planning follow-up based on individual eye health needs. Westminster Eye Care Associates provides ongoing eye care for patients in Providence with these concerns. Schedule a visit to review your history, discuss monitoring and learn whether coordination with another provider is appropriate.

Managing chronic eye disease is an ongoing process. Our doctors have specific residency and clinical training in ocular disease and work with patients over time to support their long-term eye health.

What Is Eye Disease Management?

Eye disease management refers to the ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and care of conditions that affect the health and function of the eye over time. Unlike a single treatment, management is a long-term process that involves regular follow-up, careful documentation of any changes, and adjustment of the care plan as needed.

Our doctors — several of whom completed residency training in ocular disease — are experienced in this type of ongoing care.

Conditions That May Be Monitored

Depending on your individual health picture, monitoring may involve conditions including but not limited to:

  • Glaucoma and glaucoma suspects (elevated eye pressure or other risk factors)
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Cataracts and cataract progression
  • Retinal concerns requiring monitoring
  • Corneal disease
  • Diabetic-related eye conditions

What Monitoring May Include

The specific evaluations involved in monitoring will vary based on the condition and your individual situation. Monitoring may include visual field testing, imaging of the optic nerve or retina, measurement of eye pressure, examination of the front and back of the eye, and comparison of findings with prior visits to assess for any changes.

Your doctor will explain what is being evaluated and why at each visit.

When Co-Management or Referral Is Needed

Some eye conditions are best managed in coordination with or exclusively by an ophthalmologist — particularly when surgical intervention or procedures that require a medical doctor's involvement are indicated. Our practice does not perform surgical procedures.

When a referral or specialist co-management is in your best interest, we will communicate this clearly and work to facilitate that transition. Our role in co-managed care may include pre- and post-operative monitoring, ongoing evaluation of the condition, and communication with the specialist.
