Myopia Management
Myopia management involves evaluating nearsightedness and discussing ongoing care as vision changes, particularly during childhood. Westminster Eye Care Associates provides myopia evaluations for families in Providence who have questions about their child’s vision. Book an appointment to review the child’s history and discuss appropriate monitoring and next steps with a doctor.
Myopia (nearsightedness) is increasingly common in children and tends to progress during the growing years. Our doctors are available to discuss management approaches with families — see our full myopia management page for detailed information.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a refractive condition in which objects in the distance appear blurry while close objects remain clear. It typically begins in childhood and tends to progress as the eye grows during the school-age and teenage years.
Higher degrees of myopia are associated with a greater lifetime risk of certain eye conditions. This has led to growing interest in approaches aimed at slowing the rate at which myopia progresses — often referred to as myopia management or myopia control.
Management Approaches
Several approaches have been studied and are in use for myopia management in children. These involve optical corrections and, in some cases, other doctor-directed interventions. No single approach works equally well for all children, and no treatment has been shown to stop myopia progression entirely.
Our doctors can discuss which approaches may be appropriate for your child based on their age, prescription, eye health, and individual circumstances. For full details on the approaches we discuss and current clinical thinking on myopia management, please visit our dedicated myopia management page.
