LASIK Co-Management
LASIK co-management involves eye evaluations and coordination around care provided by a separate surgical practice; it is not surgery at our office. Westminster Eye Care Associates provides co-management evaluations for interested patients in Providence. Book a visit to discuss your vision goals, eye health and whether further evaluation is appropriate.
If you are considering LASIK or another form of refractive surgery, Westminster Eye Care Associates can provide evaluation, preparation, and post-operative follow-up care in coordination with your surgical provider.
What Co-Management Means
LASIK co-management is a care model in which your optometrist works in coordination with the surgeon who will perform the procedure. Your optometrist handles elements of the pre-operative evaluation and, following surgery, the follow-up monitoring care — while the surgical team performs the actual procedure.
Westminster Eye Care Associates does not perform LASIK or other refractive surgeries. Our role in this process is as your co-managing optometric provider.
Initial Evaluation
A pre-surgical evaluation allows your doctor to assess whether your eyes may be appropriate candidates for refractive surgery consideration. This typically includes a review of your prescription history, the health of your cornea and other eye structures, and other individual factors.
Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK or other refractive procedures. Your doctor will help you understand what the evaluation reveals and what questions to discuss with a surgical provider.
Referral and Surgeon Coordination
If the evaluation suggests you may be an appropriate candidate for further assessment, we can assist with the referral process. Westminster does not endorse or have a financial relationship with any specific surgical provider — the choice of surgeon is yours.
Post-Operative Care
Following surgery, most patients require a series of follow-up visits to monitor healing and assess visual outcomes. Post-operative care includes evaluating the eye's response to surgery, confirming that healing is progressing appropriately, and addressing any concerns that arise.
Post-operative care schedules vary and are typically directed by the surgical team. Your doctor will coordinate with the surgeon's instructions.
Questions to Discuss at Your Visit
If you are considering refractive surgery, it may be helpful to come prepared with questions such as:
- Based on my prescription and eye health, might I be a candidate for a surgical evaluation?
- How stable has my prescription been over the past few years?
- Are there any features of my eye health that I should make sure a surgeon is aware of?
- What is the post-operative care process like?
- What realistic outcomes should I discuss with the surgical team?
